Description:
Core Competencies for a Secure Network Engineer
To effectively manage day-to-day operations, support firewall changes, assist end users, and handle incidents, the engineer must have a strong foundation in both networking and security.
Network Security & Firewall Management
This is the most critical area, directly impacting the security posture of the bank's network.
Required Expertise
Firewall & Threat Prevention, Expertise in managing firewall policies, including creating, modifying, and troubleshooting rule changes. Must understand integrated security approaches for threat prevention against malware and ransomware.
• Network Access Control (NAC) - Hands-on experience with Cisco Client and Forescout to enforce security policies and manage which devices can access the corporate network.
• Network Segmentation - Strong ability to implement and manage network segmentation policies, controlling traffic flow between subnets based on granular rules.
• Web Filtering - Proficiency in managing web filtering solutions, including whitelisting URLs for business purposes and configuring SSL bypasses as needed.
Connectivity & Routing
This covers the foundational transport of data across all corporate and cloud environments.
Required Expertise
• Routing & Switching - Deep, practical knowledge of network routing and switching fundamentals to provision network components and manage traffic flow across different LANs.
• Remote Access (VPN) - Specific, hands-on experience supporting Palo Alto Prisma Access and the GlobalProtect (GP) client to troubleshoot secure remote access for end-users.
• Cloud & Partner Interconnects - Experience with configuring and maintaining secure, private connectivity to public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and trusted third-party partners.
Network Services & Operations
These skills are essential for maintaining network health and responding to user and system needs.
Required Expertise
• Incident Response - Proven ability to act as an escalation point for complex network issues, performing advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics for incidents.
• Proactive Monitoring - Experience with tools (Solarwinds) and methodologies for proactive monitoring of network services to identify and address issues before they impact users.
• DNS Management - Proficiency in managing public DNS, including the creation and modification of zones and records, while ensuring DNS security.
• Load Balancing - Understanding of Data Centre load balancing (F5) concepts to support the optimisation of application delivery and server resources.
