Staff Engineer- Backend/DevOps/Platform Engineering

About the Role

As a Staff Engineer - Backend / DevOps / Platform Engineering at ABBYY, you will lead the architecture and reliability of large-scale backend and platform systems that support mission-critical workloads.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on production excellence, DevOps maturity, and scalable distributed systems design. You will drive engineering standards across teams, ensuring systems are reliable, observable, and efficient at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & System Design

• Define and lead architecture for scalable backend systems and platform services

• Design and evolve distributed systems and microservices architectures

• Influence technical decisions across teams to ensure consistent, scalable design patterns

Production Reliability & Operations

• Own end-to-end reliability of production systems, including availability, performance, and scalability

• Lead incident management, root cause analysis, and long-term reliability improvements

• Drive proactive identification and resolution of system bottlenecks

DevOps & Platform Excellence

• Establish best practices for CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and release engineering

• Drive DevOps transformation through automation, environment standardization, and deployment reliability

• Partner with teams to improve operational maturity and platform adoption

Observability & Performance

• Define and implement observability standards across systems (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting)

• Optimize systems for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency

• Ensure strong monitoring and alerting coverage for critical services

Leadership & Enablement

• Build and promote engineering best practices, documentation, and internal knowledge sharing

• Mentor engineers and elevate technical standards across the organization

• Influence engineering culture toward operational excellence and accountability

Qualifications

Required

• 8+ years of experience in backend engineering, platform engineering, or DevOps

• Strong backend engineering expertise in Java or Python, with deep system design experience

• Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems at scale

• Deep hands-on experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines

• Experience owning and operating large-scale production systems

• Strong expertise in debugging complex production issues and driving resolution

• Solid cloud platform experience (Azure preferred)

• Experience with observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)

• Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence technical direction

Preferred

• Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration

• Familiarity with streaming systems (e.g., Kafka)

• Experience designing high-availability, fault-tolerant systems

• Exposure to security, compliance, and platform governance practices

• Familiarity with data platforms, data lakes, or document management systems (DMS)
