Basic Function
The Medical Underwriter reviews applications for life, disability insurance and determines whether the requested coverage can be granted to the individual.
Individuals in this role medically underwrite applications for Group Life, Long-Term Disability and/or Short-Term Disability Insurance. This is done by utilizing medical underwriting tools such as the Medical Information Bureau (MIB), medical records and/or medical examinations to assess risk. Information pertaining to the applicant's past and present medical conditions are evaluated against company guidelines and decisions are made to either accept the applicant for coverage or decline the application.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
To assess the overall risk by collecting, reviewing and analyzing an applicant's relevant history and records, obtain additional information to determine coverage needs, to give rating and to reduce the possibility of adverse selection against the insurer by applying the available insurance manuals guidelines.

Skills required
- Knowledge of US Insurance /Medical Claims/US Healthcare is preferable
- In depth knowledge of medical terminology and body systems
- Proficiency in written English and ability to paraphrase
- Computer literacy - Basic IT knowledge and familiarity of operating systems (Windows)
- Basic Knowledge of using Internet, web browser, search engine, Microsoft excel and word
- Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced environment while ensuring quality decisions
