Management Accountant – Higher Education Sector 6-Month Contract | Hybrid Working | Sydney Based

About the organisation:
We are currently partnering with a well-established Sydney university recognised for its strong reputation, collaborative culture, and commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
Due to increased demand within the finance function, an opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join on an initial 6-month contract basis.
This role sits within a high-performing finance team and offers strong exposure to budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and financial performance analysis within a large and complex organisation.
The role :
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in supporting management accounting and financial performance reporting across the organisation.
You will work closely with stakeholders across the business to deliver meaningful insights, support budgeting and forecasting cycles, and provide variance analysis to drive informed decision-making.
This position suits a commercially minded and proactive accountant who enjoys partnering with the business and working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key responsibilities
- Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans
- Deliver monthly management reports and performance reporting packs
- Perform detailed variance analysis and provide commentary on financial performance
- Partner with stakeholders to understand drivers of cost and revenue movements
- Assist with month-end processes including journals, accruals, and reporting adjustments
- Maintain and enhance financial models and reporting tools
- Support decision-making through financial analysis and insights
- Contribute to process improvement and reporting efficiency initiatives
- Assist with audit and compliance requirements where needed
Skills & experience
- Previous experience in a Management Accountant or Assistant Management Accountant role
- Strong exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis (essential)
- Excellent analytical and financial modelling capability
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage non-finance stakeholders
- Advanced Excel skills
- Ability to work in a complex, fast-paced environment
- Experience within higher education, government, or large organisations highly regarded
- CA/CPA studying or completed advantageous
