Senior Database Engineer, Aurora Product Team

Do you like helping customers migrate, scale, and shard high volume transactional databases? You will be working on challenging technical areas such as distributed transaction, data migration, and sharding strategies. Our Database Engineering team works with strategic customers to help scale and optimize database workloads and design, build, and improve the Aurora managed database service.

This is not a typical DBA or DBE role where you manage databases for specific customers. Instead, you are an integral part of the core database service team as you will work closely with developers and product and program managers. You will engage and contribute in the full product cycle: customer need analysis, feature brainstorming, design, implementation, validation and customer adoption.\n\nKey job responsibilities\n* You work closely with our customers to understand their challenges, solve issues during critical escalations, and teach best practices.\n* You, acting as the "voice of the customer", bring learnings to the engineering process to design new features and plan end-to-end test scenarios.

By shaping the direction of the Aurora Database service, you make it easier to understand how our service is used by customers, including database developers and administrators.\n* You will actively drive feature enhancements, permanently resolve the root causes of issues, and improve the performance of our managed database service.\n* You will contribute to automation solutions to improve the operational efficiency of the entire database service.\n* You are viewed as the ultimate subject matter expertise for all things databases as your work will be highly sought by the development team, the support team, the field teams, and customers directly.\n* You will interact with the open-source community via forums, conferences and feature or bug-fix code submissions.\n\nA day in the life\nWork closely with SDEs to design new features in Aurora Postgres such as creating a workload management extension. Attend daily scrum meeting with SDEs, contribute to design doc, and review test docs. Engage with a customer on critical service issues, guide the customer on troubleshooting, educate the customer on best practices, manage customer's sentiment, and provide database level technical solutions.

When we feel supported in the workplace and at home, there's nothing we can't achieve in the cloud.\nBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:\n- Knowledge of overall system architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance in a database environment\n- Experience in systems engineering\n- Experience troubleshooting skills at all levels, from application to network to host\n- Experience in operations of highly available and scalable internet systems with a large customer base\n- Knowledge of the primary aws services (ec2, elb, rds, route53 & s3)\n- Experience in infrastructure architecture, database architecture and networking\n- 6+ years of relational database technology (such as Redshift, Oracle, MySQL or MS SQL) experience\nPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:\n- Knowledge of at least one programming language such as Java, C#, JavaScript, Python, Ruby or Perl\n- Experience using relational databases (SQL experience)\n- 5+ years of IT and/or Management Consulting Services experience\n\nOur inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers.
