4. Job Description:
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Director of U.S. Tax to lead the day-to-day operations of our tax practice. This individual will serve as a senior leader responsible for overseeing tax compliance, workflow management, quality control, staff development, and client service delivery.
The ideal candidate is a highly technical tax professional with extensive experience in U.S. taxation and public accounting. This role will work closely with firm leadership to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient delivery of tax services while helping scale the practice through strong operational management and leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Practice Leadership
- Oversee the daily operations of the tax department.
- Manage tax workflow, staffing allocations, deadlines, and resource planning.
- Ensure timely completion of tax engagements and compliance requirements.
- Establish and maintain quality control standards across all tax engagements.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, processes, and profitability.
Technical Tax Oversight
- Serve as the firm’s primary technical resource for complex tax matters.
- Review complex individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, trust, and estate tax returns.
- Research and resolve advanced federal and state tax issues.
- Develop and communicate tax positions, planning opportunities, and technical guidance.
- Monitor tax law developments and implement changes throughout the practice.
Team Management & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop tax preparers, reviewers, and managers.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching.
- Establish training programs and technical development initiatives.
- Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding tax professionals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Client Service & Relationship Management
- Serve as a senior point of contact for clients and advisors.
- Participate in client meetings involving complex tax matters and planning strategies.
- Ensure exceptional client service and responsiveness.
- Assist with client retention and expansion opportunities.
- Support firm leadership in maintaining strong client relationships.
Practice Operations
- Monitor department productivity, utilization, realization, and profitability metrics.
- Manage tax season planning and capacity forecasting.
- Ensure compliance with firm policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Assist with strategic planning and growth initiatives for the tax practice.
- Support implementation of technology, automation, and process improvements.
5. Qualification & Experience:
- Active CPA license required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive U.S. tax experience within public accounting.
- Extensive experience reviewing Forms 1040, 1065, 1120S, 1120, 1041, and multi-state tax filings.
- Strong technical knowledge of federal and state tax regulations.
- Proven experience managing tax teams and overseeing engagement workflow.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with U.S.-based firm leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Tax Manager, Senior Tax Manager, or Tax Director.
- Experience leading distributed or remote tax teams.
- Strong background in tax planning and advisory services.
- Experience with CCH Axcess, UltraTax, GoSystem, or similar tax platforms.
- Demonstrated success managing tax operations in a high-volume public accounting environment.
