The Opportunity

We are hiring a Principal Architect to lead application architecture across our Participant Portal, Integration Manager, and Alegeus Design System from India. This is a foundational hire with full executive support and a clear mandate: modernize our customer-facing application platforms, establish a token-first multi-framework design system, and build a permanent senior engineering bench in India. You will partner with US-based architecture and product leadership on global technical strategy. The ideal candidate also brings meaningful data architecture depth that will expand into broader data stewardship as the role matures.

What You Will Own

Application Architecture

• Lead architectural direction for the Participant Portal modernization on React and TypeScript—performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), security, and observability architected in from the start.
• Set architectural direction for Integration Manager as it scales to handle greater integration complexity across benefits administrators, health plans, and employer partners.
• Shape API and integration patterns (REST, GraphQL, event-driven, BFF and gateway design) serving internal apps, external partners, and enterprise integrations—with HIPAA-grade application security architected throughout.

Design System Architecture

• Own architectural direction for the Alegeus Design System, evolving it from Angular-based Web Components toward a token-first, multi-framework system that serves React (Participant Portal), Vue + Angular (Employer Portal), and future consumers cleanly.
• Establish the design token platform (W3C DTCG specification, Style Dictionary pipelines, multi-format output) and the design-tool integration strategy (Figma Variables, Tokens Studio, Dev Mode, and/or UXPin Merge).
• Establish design system governance (RFC process, component lifecycle, versioning, contribution model) and quality infrastructure (Storybook, visual regression, accessibility automation, component testing).
• Partner with our Design Lead on design-engineering workflow, component API design, and prototype-to-production handoff.

Data Architecture Stewardship (Expanding Over Time)

• Serve as architectural voice for data concerns that touch application systems—analytics, reporting, pipelines that feed product features and benefits administrators - partnering with data engineering on architecture at the application-data boundary, including PHI/PII handling and HIPAA-grade compliance.
• Grow into more direct architectural leadership on data platforms as credibility is established and as Alegeus’s data architecture function matures.

Team Building & Leadership

• Build and mentor application engineering teams in India. Develop the bench: senior engineers, tech leads, next-generation architects.
• Establish engineering practices, architecture review cadences, and code standards that scale. Represent India application engineering in leadership conversations with US architecture and product leadership.

How Success Will Be Measured

You will be measured on a mix of architectural delivery, platform maturity, and organizational outcomes, including:

• Participant Portal modernization milestones delivered on committed timelines.
• Design system maturity: token platform operational, multi-framework support, governance model in force, Storybook-to-Figma/UXPin integration working.
• Permanent India application engineering hires made and retained; reduced staff augmentation dependency.
• Architecture review cadence established and cross-portfolio consistency adopted.
• Expansion into data architecture stewardship on an agreed timeline, with clean boundaries to AI platform architecture.

What You Bring

• Leadership tenure. 12–16 years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years in principal engineer or architect roles at enterprise scale. Track record of building and mentoring application engineering teams in India and navigating US-India distributed collaboration.
• Customer-facing application depth. You have led modernization of large customer-facing application platforms—not only internal tools or greenfield projects. Deep expertise in React, TypeScript, modern frontend architecture, component systems, and performance at scale. Working knowledge of Angular and Vue a plus.
• Design system architecture—hands-on. Proven experience architecting or significantly contributing to a production design system consumed by multiple product teams. Practical expertise with design tokens (W3C DTCG), Style Dictionary pipelines, component API design, Storybook, design tool integration (Figma and/or UXPin Merge), and design system governance. This is a hard requirement for the role.
• Accessibility practice. Hands-on accessibility discipline beyond automated tooling—keyboard and screen reader testing, ARIA pattern expertise, WCAG 2.1 AA compliance architected rather than bolted on.
• Data architecture exposure. Meaningful architectural experience with data platforms, pipelines, or analytics infrastructure in at least one prior role. Working knowledge of modern data warehouses, streaming, orchestration, and cloud data services. Full data architect depth a strong plus but not required.
• Regulated-industry experience. Healthcare, fintech, or insurance—with working knowledge of HIPAA, SOC 2, or related compliance frameworks—strongly preferred given our domain.
• Leadership presence. Strong written and verbal communication; ability to explain architectural trade-offs to product, design, and executive stakeholders. Influence through credibility rather than authority. Hands-on willingness—reads code, participates in deep-dives, stays close to the work.
• Education. Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience. Advanced degree a plus.

Nice to Have

• Experience with benefits administration, HSA/FSA/HRA platforms, payments, or similar multi-tenant healthcare or financial SaaS.
• Design system work published publicly or contributed to open-source component libraries, token specifications, or design system tooling.
• Experience in architecture roles spanning both application and data domains at principal level.
• Familiarity with Web Components, Angular Elements, or other framework-agnostic component architectures.
