Job Description

Job Summary

  • Job Title : Operation Theatre (OT) Incharge / OT Manager
  • Location : Mathikere, Bangalore
  • Department : Nursing / Surgical Services
  • Reports To : Nursing Superintendent / Chief Medical Officer / Hospital Administrator
  • Core Objective : To oversee daily OT workflows, ensure zero-compromise safety protocols, and coordinate seamlessly between surgical teams, anesthetists, and support staff.


Key Responsibilities

1. Operational & Workflow Management

  • Coordinate surgical schedules : Allocate operating rooms and manage emergency or ad-hoc surgical bookings.
  • Assign staff duties : Create monthly rosters, distribute shifts, and assign dedicated scrub, circulating, and recovery nurses for posted cases.
  • Manage turnaround times : Minimize delays between consecutive surgeries by managing housekeeping, disinfection, and setup speeds.

2. Clinical Compliance & Patient Safety

  • Enforce sterilization protocols : Ensure the absolute sterility of linen, instruments, and surgical fields by auditing Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) operations.
  • Implement WHO checklists : Enforce the mandatory use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist to verify patient identities, surgical sites, and signed consent forms before incision.
  • Run microbial surveillance : Schedule weekly or bi-weekly OT air and surface swab tests, and suspend operative work immediately if culture results are doubtful.
  • Adhere to medical guidelines : Maintain strict alignment with healthcare bodies such as NABH or local governmental protocols.

3. Inventory & Equipment Management

  • Maintain stock levels : Monitor and restock surgical consumables, emergency drugs, implants, and life-saving medications.
  • Ensure equipment uptime : Partner with biomedical engineering teams for the routine preventive maintenance, calibration, and urgent repair of anesthesia workstations, monitors, and laparoscopy towers.
  • Enforce waste protocols : Monitor the strict segregation and disposal of medical waste as per regional biomedical waste management laws.

4. Team Leadership & Administration

  • Train junior staff : Onboard, mentor, and provide practical training to junior nurses and OT technicians regarding safety equipment and specialized surgical procedures.
  • Maintain documentation : Oversee surgery registers, clinical data logging, implant utilization tracking, and legal records.
  • Address incident reports : Log, investigate, and present remedial workflows for any clinical incidents, breaks in sterility, or medical near-misses.


Job Specifications & Requirements

  • Education : Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc Nursing), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), or a Bachelor's degree in Operation Theatre Technology / Healthcare Management.
  • Experience : Minimum 3 to 5 years of intensive OT experience, featuring at least 1 to 2 years in a supervisory or senior-level role.
  • Technical Skills : Deep mastery of aseptic techniques, advanced surgical instruments across specialties, patient monitoring systems, and handling medical crises.
  • Soft Skills : Authoritative leadership, level-headed crisis management, precise communication, and the capacity to multi-task under extreme pressure.
