Technical/Functional Skills -MUST HAVE SKILLS Desired skills for VMware Support Engineer include: VMware, AWS, Nutanix, Simplivity, HyperV (Client, Dell, Cisco, IBM etc. products). Service Now, high availability, Windows Operating systems.
Roles & Responsibilities 1. Perform general Windows operating system administration tasks and trou-bleshooting of issues - General Windows systems administration trouble-shooting and day-2 operations 2. Conduct and assist with root cause analysis of server related issues - Assist with and conduct root cause analysis of issues upon request by server/appli-cation owners 3. Take proactive action/measures when potential or current issue and/or mis-configuration is spotted - When a problem or potential issue is discovered, promptly notify client mgt to close gaps. 4. Assist with provisioning of local admin group access when requested by Cyber Security team - Only when requested on new server builds or directly by Cyber Security request 5. Participate in engagements with server/application owners and/or vendors t - Participate in conference bridges and coordinate outages with stakeholders resolve performance issues impairing normal server operations 6. Execute network tracing and assist with packet capturing when required by network/firewall teams - Assistance with basic tracing and installation of
packet capturing tools. Run tools under the guidance of network/firewall teams 7. Modify virtual resources on servers in VMware/AWS - Upon approval, coor-dinate potential outage and allocate/modify resources (Disk, CPU, RAM, Ethernet, etc) 8. Take a VMware/AWS snap/backup - Ensure follow through on removing snapshots promptly 9. Build physical servers and maintain a baseline of standards (e.g., DELL, Cisco, IBM, Client) - Also ensure proper setup and maintenance of remote manage-ment interfaces/ILO (e.g., IMM, iDRAC, RSA, CIMC) 10. Check for available system disk space and modify/allocate disk additional ca-pacity as needed - App owners to monitor data disk (non-system) availabil-ity. Upon approval, coordinate potential outage and allocate additional stor-age 11. Know when to go to a vendor for support before Level 3 support - Dell, Cisco, VMware, AWS, Nutanix, Simplivity/Client, etc. 12. Build and maintain scripts for system administration - Ability to create and maintain scripts for daily server administration tasks 13. Work with Application and OS vendors to resolve application and operating systems related issues - Operating system, security patch, and/or configura-tional issues 14. Manual patching of servers when required by scenarios - Coordinate outage with app/server owner 15. Reboot Servers as needed/required - Coordination with app/server owners. Coordination of ad hoc reboots to be led by server/app owners 16. Recover servers from failed reboots - Operating system troubleshooting. En-gage vendor when needed 17. OS upgrades - Coordinate/plan outage with server/app owner following change management standards 18. OS/Server Migrations - Coordinate/plan outage with server/app owner fol-lowing change management standards 19. Build new servers - Using standard procedures for automated or manual builds (virtual and physical) 20. Monitor alerts from ILO's (iDRAC, CIMC, IMM/RSA, etc.) including environ-mental issues - Use of syslog highly recommended. Take necessary actions to resolve issues with hardware critical alerts. Work with ROCC on environ-mental/network related alerts for remote (Client Name) sites 21. Build/Maintain Golden Images (virtual on-premise and cloud - Physical when applicable) - Creation and periodic maintenance of golden images 22. Perform Server decommission and upgrade/maintenance activities. VMWare: · Performance Troubleshooting for a Virtual Machine - Performance trouble-shooting through both GUI/vCenter and Shell (ESXTOP, etc.) · Update VM Tools/HW on Virtual Machine(s) · Manually modify VM Resources (CPU, Disk, Memory, Network) · Patch Vmware Host (Vuln/Stability) · Perform VM Retirements · Troubleshooting VSAN Performance Issues - Performance troubleshooting through both GUI/vCenter and Shell · Expand VSAN Disk Pools/Data Stores · vCenter Patching (Vunl/Stability)
· Create/Delete VM Snapshots/Clones · Monitor Snapshots Report, remove old/orphaned snapshots · Monitor VM Clones Report, remove old/orphaned clones · Troubleshoot Host Connectivity Issues - Reset Management Services, Re-boot host through iDRAC/CIMC/RSA, etc. · Performance monitoring - proactively detect performance constraints, re-solve and/or engage with application support for resolution - vROPS Opera-tional Dashboard will provide performance data related to the VCF Work-load Domains/Clusters · Manual VM/OVF Deployments · Perform Network TAP of Virtual Machine · Modify dSwitch/vSwitch configuration · Perform VM Migrations as needed · Perform Host Performance Troubleshooting - Performance troubleshooting through both GUI/vCenter and Shell (ESXTOP, etc.) · Monitor and correct cluster errors in each VCenter · Capacity Management/Planning · Implement Platorm Enhancements (Major Revisions) VxRail · Coordinate Part Replacements for HW Issues - SRS will notify of the failure, coordinate with Dell to replace the part(s) · Apply Driver/Firmware Updates through VxRail Manager · Implement new VxRail Environments Related to Projects |
