Technical Documentation Engineer
Documentation Engineer - Harness
About the role
Harness is building a modern documentation organization to support a rapidly evolving product portfolio and global customer base. We are looking for a Documentation Engineer who can create clear, accurate, and customer-focused documentation while growing into a strong owner within a structured, engineering-driven environment.
This role is ideal for someone with a solid foundation in technical documentation who is ready to take on broader ownership, deepen their product understanding, and increase their impact on the customer experience through documentation.
You will work closely with Senior Documentation Engineers, Product Managers, Engineers, and Support teams to ensure documentation helps customers understand not just how features work, but also why they exist and how they fit into real-world use cases.
What you will do
Own documentation for defined features and areas
- Create and maintain documentation for product features, workflows, and configurations within assigned areas.
- Manage documentation updates through drafting, review cycles, revisions, and publication with guidance for more complex topics.
- Ensure documentation is accurate, up to date, and aligned with product behavior and UI changes.
Contribute to clear, usable, customer-focused content
- Write documentation that goes beyond step-by-step instructions by explaining key concepts, use cases, and the reasoning behind important design or configuration choices.
- Improve content clarity by organizing information logically, defining prerequisites, and anticipating common user questions.
- Help identify gaps, outdated sections, and confusing areas in existing documentation and propose improvements.
Work effectively in an engineering-driven environment
- Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to understand feature behavior, limitations, and intended use cases.
- Ask clarifying questions to ensure technical accuracy and to better understand the user impact of new features.
- Work with documentation tools and workflows to manage updates, track work, and participate in review processes.
Support team execution and delivery
- Complete documentation tasks aligned with product releases and team priorities.
- Track work through systems such as JIRA and participate in planning and review discussions.
- Raise blockers early and seek guidance when requirements or inputs are unclear.
What we are looking for
Core qualifications
- 2 to 4 years of experience in technical documentation, developer documentation, or product documentation.
- Ability to understand and document product workflows, configurations, and user-facing features.
- Strong written communication skills with attention to clarity, structure, and accuracy.
- Ability to explain both how something works and why it matters to the user.
- Comfortable collaborating with engineers and product managers to gather information and clarify technical details.
- Familiarity with using task tracking tools such as JIRA to manage documentation work.
- Basic understanding of Git, version control concepts, and Markdown, with the ability to work in structured documentation environments.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working in SaaS, cloud, DevOps, developer tools, or security products.
- Exposure to docs-as-code workflows (such as Git-based collaboration and pull request reviews).
- Experience improving existing documentation for clarity, completeness, or usability based on feedback.
How you work
Customer-focused
You think about who is reading the documentation and what they are trying to achieve. You write with the user's goals, confusion points, and decision moments in mind.
Collaborative and communicative
You work well with engineers, product managers, and peers, asking thoughtful questions and sharing progress regularly.
Growth-oriented
You are open to feedback, eager to improve your craft, and interested in learning more about both the product and documentation best practices over time.
