Senior Software Engineer II - User & Accounts Systems
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join our User & Account Systems team. This team owns the core primitives that every DigitalOcean customer interacts with Teams, Organizations, Projects, resource Tags, and the customer console experience itself at cloud scale, handling millions of events per second.
In this role, you will set the technical direction for Account Management at DigitalOcean - defining the architecture for how Teams, Organizations, Projects, and Tags evolve over multi-year horizons, and how those primitives intersect with billing, identity, and AI/ML platform needs. You will be a primary technical voice in cross-org decisions, and you will establish the engineering standards the team builds against. If you are a seasoned engineer who wants to combine deep technical expertise with broad organizational impact, this is the role for you.
What you'll do
- Define Platform Architecture: Set the multi-year technical strategy for Account Management primitives; Teams, Organizations, Projects, Tags; designing for hyperscale and the evolving needs of enterprise and AI-native customers.
- Architect for Cross-Domain Integration: Lead architectural decisions on how account primitives intersect with adjacent domains Identity, Billing, and AI/ML platform teams ensuring organizational and resource models scale cleanly across all of them.
- Own Console Platform Strategy: Define the long-term architecture for console-facing capabilities notifications, reporting, dashboards, establishing the patterns other teams build on rather than building one feature at a time.
- Set Sustaining Engineering Standards: Define what technical debt prioritization, security rule coverage, and operational hygiene look like across the domain, and hold the broader team accountable to that bar.
- Architect for True Scale: Design systems and data models that handle the realities of millions of events per second across multiple regions; anticipating multi-year growth, not just current load.
- Shape Cross-Org Technical Decisions: Serve as a primary technical voice in design reviews spanning Account Systems, Identity, Billing, and Inference. Resolve architectural conflicts at the design stage, before they become production incidents.
- Mentor Senior Engineers: Coach engineers on system design, security engineering, and technical communication; act as a multiplier for the team's overall technical capability.
- Translate Strategy to Leadership: Communicate account platform strategy and investment rationale to senior leadership (VP, CPTO level), framing technical decisions in terms of customer experience, platform risk, and business impact.
What You'll Add to DigitalOcean
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record delivering complex, cloud-scale distributed systems - ideally with direct experience in user account management, identity, or customer experience domains at enterprise scale.
- Language Expert: Expert-level proficiency in Go and strong JavaScript/Node.js skills, with the judgment to make architecture calls that other engineers will build against. Exposure to Python, Rust.
- Systems Mastery: Proven ability to design and operate high-throughput, scalable systems handling millions of events per second across multiple regions - including designing for graceful degradation and multi-year growth.
- Cloud Native: Deep, hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), strong command of cloud security models, and significant Infrastructure as Code expertise (Terraform, Helm, Chef) at platform scale.
- Distributed Systems Authority: Deep expertise in distributed systems and microservices architecture, with a track record of designing systems that other teams depend on.
- Communication: Demonstrated ability to drive technical consensus across org boundaries and translate platform strategy into business impact for executive audiences.
Nice to Have
- Deep knowledge of cryptography and secure communication protocols.
- Contributions to open-source security or distributed-systems projects.
- Prior experience architecting identity and access management systems, or working at the intersection of identity and account management.
- Experience supporting compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA) as they intersect with account and access controls.
