Semantic Engineer

About The Job:

• We are looking for a skilled Semantic Engineer to design, develop, and manage semantic data models, knowledge graphs, ontologies, and linked data solutions that support enterprise data integration, interoperability, and intelligent search/use cases.
• The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with semantic web technologies, ontology modeling, RDF-based data frameworks, and query/validate standards such as SPARQL and SHACL.
• This role requires close collaboration with business, data, and engineering teams to translate complex domain knowledge into scalable semantic models and machine-readable structures.

Essential Job Functions:

• Design, build, and maintain ontologies, taxonomies, and knowledge graphs for business domains.
• Develop and manage semantic models using RDF, RDFS, and OWL.
• Create and optimize SPARQL queries for data retrieval, transformation, and analysis.
• Define and enforce semantic data validation rules using SHACL.
• Map structured and unstructured data into semantic frameworks and linked data models.
• Support enterprise data integration and interoperability through semantic standards.
• Collaborate with domain experts, architects, analysts, and developers to capture business concepts and relationships.
• Develop semantic data pipelines, transformation logic, and metadata models.
• Ensure semantic models align with business standards, governance, and regulatory requirements.
• Support implementation of knowledge graph and semantic search capabilities.
• Contribute to data quality, consistency, lineage, and semantic governance initiatives.
• Document ontology structures, modeling decisions, and semantic design standards.
• Troubleshoot issues related to semantic data modeling, query performance, and inference logic.
• Participate in architecture reviews, solution design, and best practice discussions.

Qualifications:
Semantic Technologies

• Strong understanding of Knowledge Graph concepts, including Entity Modeling, Taxonomy Design, Relationship Modeling, and Semantic Data Modeling.
• Hands-on experience with Semantic Web standards including RDF, RDFS, OWL, and SPARQL.
• Experience in ontology development and maintenance using Prote ge or any other tool.
• Knowledge of semantic validation techniques using SHACL.
• Experience working with RDF triple stores or graph databases (e.g., Apache Jena Fuseki, GraphDB, or Neo4j).

Software Development

• Strong programming skills in Java (preferred) or Python, with the ability to develop production-quality applications.
• Experience with object-oriented design principles and software engineering best practices.
• Experience building RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Familiarity with Maven/Gradle, Git, unit testing, and debugging.

Semantic Reasoning & Data Integration

• Experience implementing semantic reasoning using frameworks such as Apache Jena.
• Ability to design and implement data ingestion and transformation pipelines to convert structured or semi-structured data into RDF.
• Strong understanding of semantic query optimization and data validation.

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

• Ability to translate complex business requirements into semantic models and ontology designs.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with attention to data quality and model consistency.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with business analysts, architects, and software engineering teams.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Strong experience in semantic engineering, knowledge graph development, or ontology modeling.
• Hands-on expertise with RDF, RDFS, OWL, SPARQL, and SHACL.
• Experience designing ontologies, taxonomies, and linked data models.
• Good understanding of graph-based data modeling and semantic interoperability concepts.
• Experience with semantic data integration, metadata management, and entity relationship modeling.
• Familiarity with triple stores or graph databases such as GraphDB, Stardog, Apache Jena, Blazegraph, Neptune, or similar.
• Knowledge of data modeling, data governance, and master/reference data concepts.
• Understanding of semantic reasoning, inference, and validation techniques.
• Ability to translate business requirements into semantic models and machine-readable schemas.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience working in cross-functional and Agile teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with enterprise data standards and domain models such as FIBO, CDM, or industry-specific ontologies.
• Exposure to knowledge graph visualization and semantic search platforms.
• Familiarity with JSON-LD, SKOS, Turtle, N-Triples, or related serialization formats.
• Experience integrating semantic models with APIs, data lakes, or cloud platforms.
• Knowledge of AI/ML, graph analytics, or intelligent assistants using knowledge graphs.
• Familiarity with cloud-based graph solutions such as AWS Neptune or Azure/AWS/GCP data platforms.

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field preferred.
