Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will join ABB's Industrial Automation - Digital Industry Analytics / Research & Development organization as a Principal Architect - Observability Platform. You will provide technical leadership for defining the architecture, engineering standards, and strategic roadmap for ABB's enterprise observability platform supporting industrial cloud and edge environments. Working closely with Product Management, Platform Engineering, DevOps/SRE, Security, and Customer Operations teams, you will drive scalable, secure, and resilient platform capabilities that enable operational excellence across ABB's digital portfolio.

This role is contributing to the Industrial Automation - Digital Industry Analytics / Research & Development organization in Bangalore, India.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Define and drive the architectural vision, technology roadmap, and engineering standards for ABB's enterprise observability platform, enabling scalable, secure, and highly available cloud and edge solutions.
  • Lead architecture governance by establishing reusable reference architectures, best practices, and technical standards while guiding engineering teams through complex architectural decisions and technology adoption.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Platform Engineering, DevOps/SRE, Security, and Customer Operations teams to deliver reliable, cloud-native observability capabilities that enhance platform resilience, operational excellence, and customer experience.
  • Champion innovation, reliability engineering, and technical excellence by mentoring engineering teams, driving architectural modernization, and promoting observability and operational best practices across the organization.

Qualifications for the role

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, and enterprise architecture, with proven expertise in designing large-scale cloud-native and distributed systems.
  • Strong experience architecting enterprise observability platforms using technologies such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, New Relic, Dynatrace, Datadog, Splunk, Azure Monitor, and Application Insights.
  • Deep expertise in Kubernetes (preferably Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)), microservices, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, and hybrid cloud-edge deployment models.
  • Strong understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), operational excellence, reliability engineering, telemetry, centralized logging, distributed tracing, and monitoring best practices.
  • Proven ability to establish architecture governance, technical standards, platform roadmaps, and engineering best practices while leading cross-functional teams in enterprise environments.
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, communication, and mentoring skills with the ability to influence technical strategy and drive innovation across global engineering organizations.
