DevOps Engineer

Role Overview
The DevOps Engineer sits inside the client's Professional Services organization and carries responsibility for delivering customer-facing engagements that land with both strong client satisfaction and real technical polish. Engineers in this seat represent the client's brand in front of customers and are counted on to keep pace with current best practice, turning out well-considered, high-caliber solutions.

Core Responsibilities
Infrastructure automation through code
  • Writing code that defines and automates cloud infrastructure (AWS CloudFormation templates, Terraform, AWS CDK, and the like) so AWS environments stay repeatable and maintainable
  • Deep fluency in a scripting language — Bash, Python, JavaScript, or similar
  • Practical coding in an object-oriented language such as Python, Ruby, Go, Swift, Java, .Net, or C++
  • Automating how infrastructure and applications get deployed and tested across dev, pre-prod, and prod
  • Comfort with the end-to-end software development lifecycle, shipping via Agile inside a team
Containers and Kubernetes
  • Building, rolling out, running, and debugging sizable production microservices footprints on Kubernetes
  • Standing up and integrating a service mesh — ISTIO, Linkerd, Consul, or comparable
  • Working with Helm Charts and Custom Resource Definitions
  • Wiring up container-oriented, cloud-native CI/CD flows with tooling like Jenkins, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, or Gitlab
  • Direct work with microservices and distributed application architecture across tiered environments (Dev, Test, Prod, and so on)
Enabling developers on AWS
  • Designing, coding, shipping, and debugging Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Advising developers on AWS architecture and the design principles behind it
  • Deep hands-on with git version control, branching strategy, and CI/CD discipline
On-premises to AWS migration
  • Helping shape migration plans and then carrying them out
  • Moving microservices-based applications over to AWS
  • Confirming resources have landed in AWS and retiring what remains on-premises
Cost and operational visibility
  • Using resource tagging to attribute spend and sharpen capacity planning
  • Helping assemble cost projections tied to anticipated usage
  • Tuning AWS setups to get the most out of them technically and financially
Project governance and execution
  • Syncing with the team each day to review progress
  • Keeping teammates accountable and challenging implementation approaches to reach the strongest outcome
  • Logging time against assigned projects daily
Working as a team
  • Defaulting to transparency across the board
  • Turning around teammates' requests for information promptly
  • Being clear about your own working style while reading others', so the team gels into something respectful, effective, and high-performing
  • Taking on additional responsibilities as they come up
Required Background
Four to seven years in DevOps or SRE work inside AWS environments and/or backing software development teams — at a minimum including:
  • Four-plus years building AWS cloud infrastructure
  • Four-plus years building CI/CD pipelines with tools such as Jenkins or GitHub
  • Three-plus years running production microservices on Kubernetes
  • Container build and orchestration across Kubernetes, AWS EKS, Helm, CRDs, and related tooling
  • Solid grounding in current AWS cloud security practice
  • Hands-on command of both Linux and Docker
  • Skilled at authoring Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation)
  • Skilled with configuration-management tooling such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet
  • Capable in one or more programming/scripting languages — Python, Ruby, Go, Swift, Java, .Net, C++
  • Working command of Agile methodology
  • Standout communication and time management
  • A close eye for detail
Nice to Have
  • Relevant certifications — Certified Kubernetes Administrator (strongly preferred), AWS Solution Architect - Professional, AWS DevOps Engineer - Professional, AWS Data Analytics - Specialty, and the like
  • Production experience with GitOps — Git, ArgoCD and app-of-apps patterns, Prometheus, Grafana, and similar tooling
  • Building static and dynamic code-analysis and testing tools into CI/CD pipelines (SonarQube, Selenium, etc.)
  • Exposure to Kubernetes service mesh architectures such as ISTIO
  • Advanced networking and routing know-how within AWS
  • A graduate degree in engineering or information systems
  • Track record of contributing to open-source projects
