DB2 to PostgreSQL Migration

1. Assessment & Planning

• Analyze DB2 schema, data types, stored procedures, triggers, and constraints.
• Identify compatibility issues between DB2 and PostgreSQL.
• Estimate data volume and downtime requirements.

2. Schema Conversion

• Convert DB2 schema to PostgreSQL-compatible format.
• Map data types (e.g., DECIMAL in DB2 to NUMERIC in PostgreSQL).
• Recreate indexes, constraints, and relationships in PostgreSQL.

3. Data Migration

• Extract data from DB2 using custom scripts, or ETL tools.
• Transform data if needed (e.g., date formats, encoding).
• Load data into PostgreSQL using COPY, INSERT, or ETL pipelines.

4. Code Migration

• Rewrite DB2 stored procedures, functions, and triggers in PostgreSQL PL/pgSQL.
• Validate logic and performance in the new environment.

5. Testing & Validation

• Perform data integrity checks (row counts, checksums).
• Validate application functionality against PostgreSQL.
• Conduct performance benchmarking.

6. Cutover & Rollback Planning

• Plan downtime or live migration strategy.
• Prepare rollback procedures in case of failure.

7. Post-Migration Tasks

• Monitor PostgreSQL performance.
• Tune queries and indexes.
• Set up backups and disaster recovery.

DBA Responsibilities for PostgreSQL to PostgreSQL Migration

1. Pre-Migration Planning

• Identify source and target PostgreSQL versions.
• Assess compatibility (especially for major version upgrades).
• Plan for zero-downtime migration if required.

2. Schema & Data Transfer

• Use tools like pg_dump and pg_restore, or pg_basebackup for full cluster migration.
• Ensure schema consistency and resolve version-specific changes.

3. Data Validation

• Compare row counts, checksums, and sample data between source and target.
• Validate indexes, constraints, and sequences.

4. Application Testing

• Test application connectivity and functionality with the new database.
• Validate performance and query plans.

5. Cutover Planning

• Schedule cutover with minimal impact.
• Ensure replication (if used) is in sync before switching.

6. Post-Migration Monitoring

• Monitor logs, performance metrics, and error rates.
• Tune PostgreSQL parameters for optimal performance.
