Senior Director, Engineering - Serverless Compute Engineering

As the Senior Director, Serverless Compute Engineering, this leader will define and own the strategy and execution of DigitalOcean's ServerlessCompute services, including application platform and serverless observability capabilities. This role will be responsible for making DigitalOcean the simplest place for developers to build, deploy, operate, and observe modern cloud-native and AI-native applications while driving operational excellence as we scale.

The Role

We are looking for a strategic technical leader to define, own, and lead the end-to-end execution and operational excellence of our next-generation serverless application platform. Reporting to the VP of Core Cloud Compute and Networking, you will define the long-term strategy for our serverless products, including App Platform, Functions, and Serverless Observability while delivering a world-class developer experience for deploying, operating, and monitoring modern applications.

What You'll Do

• Strategic Roadmap & Execution: Define and own the multi-year engineering strategy and execution roadmap for Serverless Functions, App Platform, and Observability, enabling customers to build, deploy, and operate applications with minimal operational overhead.
• Application Platform & Developer Experience: Lead the evolution of DigitalOcean's managed application platform to simplify application deployment, accelerate developer productivity, and support modern cloud-native and AI-native application architectures.
• Serverless Platform: Define and deliver the next generation of DigitalOcean Functions, enabling scalable, event-driven serverless workloads with improved performance, reliability, and developer experience.
• Serverless Observability Platform & Operational Excellence: Lead the evolution of DigitalOcean's serverless observability platform, delivering richer telemetry, monitoring, diagnostics, and operational insights while driving world-class operational excellence, availability, and reliability across the platform.
• Platform Scalability & Reliability: Drive the long-term architectural strategy to ensure the application platform scales efficiently, remains highly resilient, and supports the growing demands of AI-native applications and enterprise workloads.
• Customer & Business Growth: Execute platform initiatives that improve customer adoption, developer productivity, customer retention, and business growth while maintaining a simple and intuitive cloud experience.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with Product, Design, Compute, Networking, AI, Database, and Customer Success leadership to define the product roadmap, prioritize investments, and accelerate platform adoption.
• Organizational Excellence: Lead the engineering organization, building a high-performance culture that balances rapid innovation with operational excellence, engineering quality, and customer obsession.

What you'll add to DigitalOcean:

• Technical Depth: Extensive experience building and operating large-scale cloud platforms, PaaS offerings and serverless platforms.
• Developer Platform Expertise: Deep understanding of developer platforms, deployment systems, observability, cloud-native technologies, and the operational challenges of running production applications at scale.
• Strategic Execution: Proven ability to define long-term product strategy, translate business goals into engineering execution, and deliver highly scalable platform capabilities that drive customer adoption and business growth.
• Leadership: Experience leading large, geographically distributed engineering organizations through significant platform evolution while maintaining a strong focus on reliability, operational excellence, engineering velocity, and customer experience.
