Job Description

Reference Number: 53584: 2027 Respiratory Pleural Fellow
Employment Type: Fixed Term Full Time (FT)
Location: Northern Health (All Campuses)

About Northern Health:

As an organisation we have a clear focus on how we service and partner with our community, including our strategy of helping the community stay well when at home. Our reputation of community minded, inclusive and progressive is matched to none.

Northern Health is located in the rapidly growing northern suburbs with projected growth the biggest in the state. With a booming, culturally rich and diverse community, and less than an hour’s drive from the CBD (still within the bounds of Myki and ride-sharing), Melbourne’s North is fast becoming the place to be.

Northern Health is seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Respiratory Trainees to join the Pleural Medicine Unit within the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community, and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are delivered across six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda, and Coburg.

About the Role:

The Pleural Medicine Unit, within the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Northern Health, plays a critical role in delivering a quaternary-level service for both inpatients and outpatients. Referrals are received from inpatient units, the Emergency Department, and General Practice.

The Unit aims to lead a transformative and innovative approach to pleural disease management across Australia.

The Pleural Medicine Unit comprises a multidisciplinary team, including respiratory consultants, a nurse practitioner, a clinical nurse consultant, and resident medical staff. The team works collaboratively with a strong commitment to delivering person-centred, evidence-based care.

This role requires a commitment to continuous quality improvement and excellence in patient care, along with a collaborative and proactive approach to achieving the Unit’s vision.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Management of pleural inpatients
  • Inpatient consultations
  • Participation in weekly outpatient clinics (Pleural Clinic and General Respiratory Clinic)
  • Education and supervision of junior medical staff

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Current registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Strong clinical capability with substantive experience and training in Respiratory Medicine
  • Progression toward, or attainment of, specialist qualification — either as a Basic Physician Trainee (BPT3 or above), Advanced Trainee, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), or equivalent recognised specialist pathway
  • A clear commitment to ongoing professional development and excellence in Respiratory Medicine

Highly regarded attributes include:

  • An interest in teaching, with demonstrated experience educating medical students, Hospital Medical Officers (HMOs), and multidisciplinary teams
  • An interest in advancing clinical practice through research, innovation, and evidence-based care
  • Confidence working within complex clinical environments, supported by familiarity with clinical information systems
  • Exposure to pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound, or a strong interest in developing these skills

Why join the Pleural Medicine Unit?

This role offers an outstanding opportunity to work within a progressive, high-performing multidisciplinary team at the forefront of pleural disease management. You will gain valuable exposure to complex and high-acuity cases, develop advanced procedural skills, and contribute to a service committed to innovation, quality improvement, and clinical excellence.
